Exercise beats cancer, but how?

We know exercise makes us look good.  We know it’s great for our health & wellness and we know its great for improving our mental and emotional wellbeing. But the best news is, we are starting to learn about the benefits for more serious illnesses, such as cancer.

It has now been proven that targeted exercise can help fight cancer. If you haven’t already watched the Catalyst episode, Exercise and Cancer – then you should.  Here is an exert from the program to really understand why we all need to move, DAILY!

By the time you hit midlife, odds are you or someone close to you will be touched by cancer. Cancer remains a potentially lethal lottery and everyone’s experience is different. But appropriate exercise under professional supervision – before, during, or after treatment – seems to substantially improve your odds.
Catalyst meets a group of cancer patients that is experiencing extraordinary benefits from prescribed targeted exercise programs

“The result would be striking enough, but the Danish researchers went much further. They were able to demonstrate HOW exercise did it – what sort of signal it was releasing to make the natural killer cells attack the cancer. First signal – adrenaline. Adrenaline, produced during exercise, actives the natural killer cells to be released into the bloodstream. They’re now primed for surveillance and looking for a target. That information then comes via the muscles. Exercise causes muscles to release a chemical signal called interleukin 6. Interleukin 6 not only seeks out the tumour cells directly, informing them to cease and desist, it also tells the natural killer cells what to target.”

If that doesn’t make you want to exercise for other reasons than just to have a 6 pack, then I don’t know what will!

“The evidence is so strong now that the cancer patients deserve this medicine. It’s a very powerful medicine. It actually increases their survival and it has no side effects. So, what we need now is for actually the medical and health professions to embrace it and actually make it an integral component of the overall management of the cancer Patient.”

Everyone’s cancer experience is different, but appropriate exercise before, during or after treatment seems to substantially improve our odds.

So even if you don’t want a 6 pack or to be able to run 20km without stopping, then you still need to ensure you are moving, daily! We know the benefits far out way the negatives, so what are you waiting for?
